Boston College secured a narrow 68-67 win over Wake Forest on Wednesday night, thanks to a last-second put-back by Aidan Shaw. Shaw finished the game with a season-high 11 points. Fred Payne led the Eagles in scoring with 23 points.
The game began with Jayden Hastings scoring the first basket for Boston College, but Wake Forest quickly answered with a three-pointer. After the first media timeout, Boston College went on a 9-3 run to take an early lead, but Wake Forest responded in kind and regained control of the game.
Donald Hand Jr. reached a milestone during the first half, becoming the 48th player in program history to score 1,000 career points after making a driving layup. At halftime, Wake Forest held a 29-22 advantage.
In the second half, Fred Payne scored five consecutive points for Boston College to cut into Wake Forest’s lead. Boden Kapke hit a corner three-pointer that gave Boston College its first lead since midway through the first half. The Eagles extended their run to 23-5 in the opening eight minutes of the second half, highlighted by an Aidan Shaw dunk and a buzzer-beater three-pointer from Shaw.
Wake Forest reduced Boston College’s lead to three points late in the game and eventually took a one-point lead after forcing a turnover and hitting another three-pointer with less than thirty seconds left. With just two-tenths of a second remaining, Aidan Shaw scored on an offensive rebound to secure the victory for Boston College.
Fred Payne’s performance marked his eighth game this season scoring more than 20 points. Boden Kapke contributed 13 points and collected 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the year. Shaw’s 11 points were his highest output this season.
With this win, Boston College improved its record in ACC play to 3-12 and is now 10-18 overall for the regular season. The Eagles also improved their all-time series record against Wake Forest to 18-16.
Next up, Boston College will travel to Coral Gables, Florida, for another matchup against Miami on February 28 at 2:00 p.m., which will be broadcast on ACC Network and WEEI 850 radio. This will be their 62nd meeting; Boston College leads Miami in their all-time series by one win but lost their most recent encounter earlier this month.
