Ayanna Pressley, currently serving as a U.S. Congresswoman for Massachusetts’ 7th district since 2019, recently shared a series of tweets concerning her visit to ICE facilities in Louisiana. Pressley, who succeeded Mike Capuano as the representative of the district, visited along with Senator Ed Markey and Representative Jim McGovern to address the conditions in which her constituent, Rümeysa Öztürk, and Mahmoud Khalil, are detained.
On April 23, 2025, Congresswoman Pressley tweeted, “I traveled to Louisiana with @SenMarkey & @RepMcGovern to visit the ICE facilities Mahmoud Khalil & my constituent Rümeysa Öztürk are being unlawfully held in harrowing conditions.” Her statement stressed her concern over what she described as the “lawless White House” and vowed solidarity with those affected by these conditions.
Announcing a debrief following the trip, Pressley invited her audience to listen in, stating on April 23, 2025, “Tune in as we debrief our trip to Louisiana where we met with Rümeysa Öztürk and Mahmoud Khalil.” This was to provide more information and updates regarding their visit and the outcomes they hoped to achieve.
Later that same day, Pressley expressed her emotions about the visit, saying, “What we saw & heard in Louisiana was harrowing. It was heartbreaking & it is enraging.” She emphasized the visit’s focus on “accountability, transparency, & affirming” constitutional rights, urging for the release of “Rümeysa & Mahmoud.”
Ayanna Pressley, aged 49, originally from Cincinnati, Ohio and a resident of Boston, continues her legislative work informed by her previous experience in the Massachusetts House of Representatives.
