During the first quarter of 2026, Benjamin Healthcare Center emerged as the largest nursing home in Suffolk County, according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

The facility offered 205 total beds in the period, exceeding the Suffolk County average by 81 beds. On average, 80.2 residents were served during these months.

The overall CMS rating for Benjamin Healthcare Center was 2 out of 5. This lagged behind the Massachusetts average nursing home score of 3.1.

Sherrill House ranked second for size among Suffolk County nursing homes with 196 beds. Third was Highland Park Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center, operating 195 beds.

Benjamin Healthcare Center incurred $95,036 in fines across one penalty as of the first quarter of 2026.

Suffolk County reported a total of 12 non-profit nursing homes within Massachusetts.

According to U.S. Census Bureau estimates, the older adult population nationwide continues to rise as numbers of younger Americans decline. Between 2020 and 2024, the count of Americans age 65 and above grew by 13%, and the population younger than 18 decreased by 1.7%. The country’s older adult population has expanded significantly since 1920, when it was 4.9 million, to more than 61 million by 2024.

A study published in 2021 indicates that approximately half of adults age 65 and older—about 28 million people—are likely to need long-term services and support. The report also finds that more than a third of this group may eventually rely on nursing home care.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an insurance education organization. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
