Boston College lost to Miami in the Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Championship, as announced on May 22. The defeat leaves the team waiting for Monday’s national tournament selection to learn their next steps.
The outcome is significant for Boston College, which started the week as a top-4 seed and was considered a strong contender. Their loss means they must now wait to see if they will secure a spot in the NCAA Tournament.
“All of the credit is to Miami,” said BC head coach Todd Interdonato after his team’s 8-2 loss. “If you look at what they did, from the start that they got, [it] seemed like any time we had a threat, their guys out of the bullpen were able to make pitches. They played elite defense with a play in center, a play in right, a double play turned in the eighth. They just played a complete game, and I just give a ton of credit to them.”
Interdonato also commented on Miami’s pitching strategy and his own team’s approach: “I thought they were on the attack,” he said. “And it felt like they were in control of our bats. When this game started, our whole objective was to get in control – put up the first zero, score the first run – which is what we did. But they answered with that four-spot in the second, [and] that gave them control… They were just in control for the whole time and landed multiple pitches for strikes to [consistently] get ahead.” He added about his team’s offensive performance: “We just have to continue our uphill climb… What our offense is missing – everybody kind of waits for the big swing or the big hit or somebody clearing bases with a double… Our offense is predicated on aggressiveness and creating rhythm… We are really good one-through-nine when we’re at our best.”
After returning home from North Carolina following their defeat by Miami, Boston College now faces an uncertain wait until Monday’s NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament Selection Show airs at noon on ESPN2. The broadcast will reveal whether Boston College secures its expected No. 2 seed position among other teams advancing into regional games starting Friday.
Interdonato concluded: “There’s a lot of anger in that dugout,” he said about his players’ reaction following their elimination from ACC contention this year. “They’re [angry]. I don’t think I’m going to have to motivate them at practice this week.”
