Boston College Baseball defeated Northeastern 3-2 in a closely contested game on Mar. 24.
The win improves Boston College’s record to 17-8 overall and 6-3 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, while Northeastern falls to 12-10 and 7-2 in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Eagles’ pitching staff combined for a season-high 16 strikeouts, marking their most in a single game since April of last year.
Jacob Burnham started for Boston College, pitching two and one-third innings with four strikeouts and allowing one earned run. Luke D’Ancona relieved him, setting career highs with three and two-thirds innings pitched and six strikeouts. Sean Hard contributed two innings with four strikeouts before Kyle Kipp finished the game by striking out two batters to secure the victory.
The Eagles took an early lead when Jack Toomey doubled in the second inning and later scored on a ground ball from Luke Gallohe. Northeastern tied the game in the third after loading the bases, but D’Ancona entered with one out and escaped further damage by recording a tag out at home on a wild pitch followed by a strikeout.
In the fifth inning, Colin Larson walked and scored on Nick Wang’s single through the left side of the infield. Boston College added an insurance run in the ninth after Owen DeShazo advanced around the bases following a sacrifice bunt from Cesar Gonzalez and another from Julio Solier that allowed DeShazo to score.
Northeastern narrowed Boston College’s lead to one run with an RBI single in their half of the ninth inning, but Kipp struck out his final batter to end the game. The Eagles are scheduled to play Merrimack next, with first pitch set for tomorrow at 3:00 p.m.
