Boston College baseball lost to Liberty 4-3 in the opening game of the Athens Regional in the NCAA Tournament on May 29. The Eagles, seeded second, faced third-seeded Liberty and were unable to hold onto a late lead at Foley Field.
After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, Boston College responded with three consecutive runs. A.J. Colarusso pitched seven innings for the Eagles, striking out six and allowing two runs. Julio Solier hit two home runs—the first multi-home run game of his career—and moved into a tie for second place for single-season hits at Boston College with 82. Jack Toomey added a solo home run that gave Boston College its first lead of the day in the eighth inning.
Liberty scored early when Jaxon Sorenson hit an RBI single followed by Nick Barone’s RBI single to center field. Solier’s home run in the fifth put Boston College on the board, and he tied it again with another homer in the seventh. Toomey’s solo shot made it 3-2 entering the ninth inning.
However, Liberty answered with two runs in their final at-bat to retake a one-run lead and secured victory by holding off Boston College’s offense in their last chance.
The Eagles are scheduled to play again at noon on Saturday against either top-seeded Georgia or fourth-seeded LIU as part of game three of the Athens Regional. The broadcast network will be determined after Georgia and LIU conclude their matchup.
