Boston College Baseball lost to North Carolina, 5-2, in the second game of their weekend series on April 3.
The matchup saw No. 22 Boston College Eagles (22-10, 9-5 Atlantic Coast Conference) facing No. 6 North Carolina Tar Heels (26-5-1, 10-4 ACC). The result puts Boston College at a disadvantage heading into the final game of the three-game set.
Tyler Mudd started for the Eagles and pitched four innings, allowing three earned runs and striking out four batters. John D Mitchell and Luke D’Ancona handled pitching duties in the fifth and sixth innings, conceding one earned run without recording a strikeout. Chase Hartsell and John Kwiatkowski finished the game on the mound for Boston College, giving up an additional earned run while striking out four.
North Carolina took an early lead with a solo home run in the first inning and extended it to three runs after a two-run triple in the second. Boston College scored its first run in the third inning when Colin Larson reached base on a walk and eventually scored following several wild pitches by North Carolina’s starter. The Tar Heels added another run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning.
In response, Carter Hendrickson led off with a walk for Boston College in the seventh inning before advancing to third base through sacrifices by teammates Luke Gallo and Danny Surowiec. Gunnar Johnson drove him home with a single to left field to bring Boston College within two runs. However, North Carolina secured their victory by adding another run off a double down the left field line later that inning.
The Eagles are scheduled to play North Carolina again tomorrow afternoon for their final matchup of this series.
