Boston College Baseball lost to Northwestern 5-4 on Saturday during the Hub City Invitational in Spartanburg, South Carolina. The defeat brings Boston College’s record to 3-2, while Northwestern improves to 4-2.
Sean Hard started for Boston College and pitched 1.2 innings before being relieved by John Kwiatkowski, Kyle Kipp, and Gavin Soares. Together, the four pitchers struck out 14 batters. Kipp recorded a career-high seven strikeouts.
Boston College took an early lead after Julio Solier hit a leadoff triple and Nick Wang followed with his second home run of the season, making it 2-0. Northwestern responded in the bottom of the second inning with two extra-base hits that tied the game at two runs each.
The Eagles regained the lead in the third inning when Owen DeShazo hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Jack Toomey for a 3-2 advantage.
In the sixth inning, Ty Mainolfi and Wang drew walks to put runners on first and second base. After Toomey grounded into a double play, Kyle Wolff doubled to right field to bring in Wang and increase Boston College’s lead to 4-2.
Northwestern took control in the bottom of the sixth with three runs from a home run and a two-run triple, putting them ahead 5-4.
Boston College managed two more base runners—Solier and Gunnar Johnson—but did not score again.
The Eagles are scheduled to play Cornell at 10:00 a.m. and Northwestern at 2:00 p.m. tomorrow at Fifth Third Park in Spartanburg.
