The Boston Red Sox and Boston College have announced that the 14th annual Boston College Baseball ALS Awareness Game will take place at Fenway Park on Saturday, April 11 at 2 p.m. The Eagles are set to host the Virginia Tech Hokies in a matchup that continues to honor former Boston College baseball captain Pete Frates, who was diagnosed with ALS in 2012 and passed away in 2019 at age 34.
General admission tickets for the event are priced at $15 and are available for purchase through redsox.com/alsgame. All proceeds from ticket sales will go to the Peter Frates Foundation, which supports ALS patients and their families by helping cover costs associated with specialized home care as the disease progresses.
Pete Frates, a member of the class of 2007, captained the Eagles during his senior year. He returned to Boston College as director of operations in 2012 after being diagnosed with ALS at age 27. Frates played a key role in launching the global Ice Bucket Challenge in 2014, an initiative that raised over $220 million for ALS research. In recognition of his impact, Boston College named its new indoor baseball and softball facility after him in 2019. His No. 3 jersey was retired at Shea Field in 2016, and he received the NCAA Inspiration of the Year award in 2017. Memorabilia from his playing days—including his BC hat and glove—along with the bucket used during his Ice Bucket Challenge at Fenway Park are preserved in Cooperstown.
The first ALS Awareness Game was held by Boston College in 2012 following Frates’ diagnosis. The event has been hosted several times at Fenway Park since then, including games against NC State and Florida State that drew record crowds. After two years back at Harrington Athletics Village, the game returned to Fenway Park in 2022 and has remained there since.
“This game is an important tradition for our program,” said organizers from both teams.
The upcoming game marks five consecutive years that Fenway Park will serve as host for this awareness event.
