Boston College Baseball defeated North Carolina, 6-1, in the opening game of a three-game series on Apr. 2.

The victory puts Boston College at a record of 22-9 overall and 9-4 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, while North Carolina stands at 25-5-1 and also holds a conference record of 9-4.

A.J. Colarusso started for Boston College and pitched six innings, allowing one run and striking out seven batters. Cesar Gonzalez finished the game with three scoreless innings and five strikeouts to secure the win for the Eagles.

North Carolina scored first in the second inning after an error allowed a runner to reach home plate. Boston College responded quickly in the third inning when Julio Solier hit a double, advanced to third on a groundout by Ty Mainolfi, and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Nick Wang. The Eagles took the lead in the fourth inning after Carter Hendrickson was hit by a pitch, moved to second base with help from Luke Gallo, and then scored on Gunnar Johnson’s single.

In later innings, Boston College extended its lead. Danny Surowiec reached base after being hit by a pitch in the sixth inning before scoring on Colin Larson’s single through the infield. The team added another run in the eighth when Solier drew a bases-loaded walk that brought Gallo home from third base. Two more runs were scored in the ninth as Jack Toomey tripled—his fifth triple this season—and later crossed home plate following Hendrickson’s fly out.

Gonzalez closed out North Carolina with back-to-back fly outs to earn his second save of the season.

The teams are scheduled to play again tomorrow night for game two of their weekend series.
