Boston College falls to Merrimack despite early lead; rematch set for Saturday

The Boston College men’s hockey team, ranked No. 14 nationally, lost 4-2 to Merrimack on Friday night at Lawler Arena in North Andover, Massachusetts. James Hagens and Dean Letourneau each scored for the Eagles, with assists coming from Andre Gasseau, Oscar Hemming, and Teddy Stiga.

Following this result, Boston College’s record stands at 16-10-1 overall and 10-7-0 in Hockey East play. Merrimack improved to 15-12-1 overall and 8-9-1 in the conference.

Boston College took an early lead midway through the first period when Hagens scored off a pass from Gasseau. The Eagles extended their advantage minutes later after Stiga forced a turnover during a penalty kill, allowing Letourneau to score with a wrist shot.

Merrimack responded late in the first period with a power-play goal. Early in the second period, they tied the game with a short-handed goal. In the third period, Merrimack scored twice within 41 seconds to secure the win.

James Hagens recorded his 16th goal of the season and has now registered points in five consecutive games. Dean Letourneau notched his 17th goal of the year and has scored in four of his last five games. Andre Gasseau reached his tenth assist of the season, Oscar Hemming tallied his seventh assist, and Teddy Stiga increased his season total to thirteen assists.

Boston College holds an all-time record of 81 wins, 29 losses, and seven ties against Merrimack.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow night at Kelley Rink to conclude their season series. The game is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start and will be broadcast on ESPN+ as well as WEEI 850 AM.
