Boston College lost to SMU 94-70 in a road game on Saturday evening in Dallas, Texas. Fred Payne led the Eagles with 20 points, while Jason Asemota achieved career-highs with 10 points and three blocks.
In the first half, Boden Kapke and Fred Payne each made early three-pointers to keep Boston College close. Chase Forte and Luka Toews also hit from beyond the arc, giving BC a brief lead at 12-11 with just over 14 minutes left in the half. The teams traded leads through a mix of inside shots and threes before SMU held a one-point advantage at the eight-minute media timeout.
Asemota scored back-to-back three-pointers just before the four-minute mark, putting Boston College ahead 36-29. However, SMU responded with an 11-0 run to end the half, leading 40-36 at halftime.
The second half remained competitive until SMU used an 8-0 run to push their lead into double digits with over 14 minutes remaining. Kapke and Asemota contributed slam dunks midway through the period, but SMU maintained control for the rest of the game.
Fred Payne’s performance marked his 23rd double-digit scoring game out of 27 this season. Jason Asemota not only set career-highs in points and blocks but also matched his season-high with eight rebounds. All nine Boston College players who played recorded at least one point, which is only the second time this has happened this season.
With this result, Boston College’s record falls to 2-12 in ACC play and 9-18 overall for the regular season. Their all-time series record against SMU now stands at three wins and no losses for SMU.
Looking ahead, Boston College will return home to face Wake Forest on Tuesday, February 24. The game is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off and will be broadcast on ESPNU as well as WEEI 850 radio. This will be the teams’ 34th meeting; Boston College currently leads the series against Wake Forest by one win (17-16). Last year’s matchup was won by Wake Forest in Winston-Salem by a score of 72-66.
