Boston College Baseball began its season with a 6-4 win over Seton Hall in the Puerto Rico Challenge on Friday night. The game, held in Ponce, Puerto Rico, marked the first contest for both teams this year.
A.J. Colarusso started on the mound for Boston College and pitched four innings, allowing two unearned runs in the first inning before settling down to record five strikeouts. Seton Hall maintained its lead until the fifth inning when Carter Hendrickson doubled down the left field line to drive in Julio Solier. Hendrickson then stole third base—his second stolen base of the evening—and scored on a sacrifice fly by Nick Wang. Ty Mainolfi later put Boston College ahead 3-2 after scoring on a wild pitch.
Cesar Gonzalez relieved Colarusso in the bottom of the fifth and struck out his first two batters before surrendering a two-run home run that gave Seton Hall a one-run advantage.
The sixth inning saw no runs from either team. In the top of the seventh, Hendrickson hit his second double of the game and was driven in by Wang. Boston College loaded the bases with one out before Jack Toomey added another run with a sacrifice fly.
Gavin Soares entered as relief for Gonzalez with one out in the bottom of the seventh and helped end a threat by inducing a double play—the only one of the game. Wang recorded his third RBI with another sacrifice fly to score Solier in the eighth inning.
Soares finished out the game for Boston College by striking out his final two batters in the ninth inning.
Boston College will continue its participation in the Puerto Rico Challenge, facing Houston at 1:30 p.m. AST on Saturday.
