The Boston College softball team lost its opening game at the Hokie Invitational, falling 7-1 to Michigan at the James Moyer Sports Complex in Salem, Virginia.

Michigan took an early lead with three runs in the first inning. Boston College responded in the second inning when Janis Espinoza hit a solo home run over the left field fence, narrowing the gap to 3-1.

In the third inning, Bailey Kendziorski caught a line drive and quickly doubled off a runner at first base for a defensive highlight. Despite collecting eight hits during the game, Boston College was unable to close the deficit as Michigan maintained control and secured the win.

Espinoza’s home run marked her first of the season. She is currently on a seven-game hitting streak. Sammy Horn extended her own hitting streak to nine games. Adriana Martinez led Boston College with three hits, her highest total in a single game this season.

Boston College will continue play at the Hokie Invitational tomorrow, facing JMU and Penn State. The first pitch against JMU is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
