The Boston College Eagles softball team split their games on Friday at the Fonseca Memorial Tournament in Tampa, Florida. The Eagles opened with a 9-1 win over DePaul but were later defeated by Yale, 2-0.
In the first game against DePaul, Boston College started strong. Emma Knight and Abby Ptak reached base with singles in the first inning, setting up Kiley Buckley for a three-run home run. This was Buckley’s second collegiate home run and her first since joining Boston College.
The Eagles continued to add runs in the following innings. Meghan Schouten and Kae DePerio singled in the second inning before Sammy Horn’s sacrifice bunt scored Schouten. Janis Espinoza walked, and while DePaul’s defense was distracted, DePerio stole home to increase the lead to 5-0.
DePaul managed to score one run in the third inning, but Boston College responded with an RBI double from Schouten. In the fourth inning, Knight hit a two-run homer to left field. The game ended after five innings due to errors and a wild pitch from DePaul, giving Boston College a 9-1 victory under the run rule.
In their second game of the day, Yale took an early lead with an RBI triple in the first inning and added another run in the sixth. Despite totaling six hits—led by Espinoza’s two-hit performance—the Eagles could not convert those opportunities into runs.
Pitchers Alyx Rossi and Kelly Colleran combined for six strikeouts while limiting Yale’s scoring chances. Defensively, Boston College did not commit any errors during this game.
After Friday’s games, several players extended personal streaks: Abby Ptak has now hit safely in five consecutive games while Buckley has reached base in eight straight contests. Over both games, pitchers Emily Van Cleef, Rossi, and Colleran combined for a 1.91 ERA compared to opponents’ 5.09.
Boston College will conclude its participation in the Fonseca Memorial Tournament on Saturday with games against University of South Florida at 5 p.m., followed by Indiana State.
