The Boston College softball team announced on Mar. 26 that it will play its home opener this week at Harrington Athletics Village, hosting No. 12 Virginia Tech for an Atlantic Coast Conference series. The Eagles, who have a record of 10-20 overall and 2-4 in the ACC, are scheduled to begin the series with a doubleheader on Friday at 3 p.m., with game three set for Saturday at the same time, weather permitting.
The home opener is notable as it comes after Boston College played its first 30 games of the season on the road. This marks their latest home debut since March 30, 2017. Last season, the Eagles also hosted a ranked opponent when Stanford visited Chestnut Hill in their finale.
In their most recent outing, Boston College went 1–2 in a road series against Pitt. The team hit seven home runs across three games and saw Adriana Martinez deliver her third grand slam of the season during game two. Abby Ptak led offensively with a .556 batting average over the weekend, followed by Janis Espinoza at .455 and Martinez at .429. Pitcher Bailey Kendziorski threw her second complete game of the year to earn her first win while allowing only one earned run and striking out four batters.
Freshman Emma Knight has made an immediate impact this season by leading Boston College with 28 runs batted in (RBI) and tallying eight home runs so far. After playing North Carolina earlier this month, Knight became just the sixth Eagle ever to hit two homers in one game and tied Tatiana Cortez’s program record with seven RBI in a single contest—a feat last achieved in 2017.
Looking ahead to their opponent, Virginia Tech enters with a strong record of 28-4 overall and has risen from No.21 to No.12 nationally this season. In pitching, Bree Carrico was named D1 Softball National Freshman of the Week after allowing only one hit over eleven innings pitched and striking out thirteen batters; Emma Mazzarone also delivered standout performances including an eight-strikeout shutout victory last weekend. Offensively for Virginia Tech, Jordan Lynch (.453) and Addison Foster (.422) both carry batting averages above .400 into this week’s matchup.
Following this weekend’s series against Virginia Tech, Boston College will travel to Providence for a rescheduled non-conference game before returning to ACC play against Georgia Tech.
