The Boston University men’s lacrosse team is set to begin its Patriot League season by hosting No. 20 Navy at Nickerson Field on Saturday, Feb. 28. The game will start at noon and be streamed live on ESPN+.
Boston University, currently holding a 2-2 record, is coming off a 16-11 loss to Yale. Sophomore Timothy Shannehan led the Terriers in that game with six points, scoring four goals and providing two assists. He leads the team this season with 13 goals, 12 assists, and a total of 25 points. Shannehan averages 6.25 points per game, which ties him for second nationally and places him first in the Patriot League. He also ranks third in the nation and second in the league for assists per game at three.
Junior short-stick defensive midfielder Luke Davis had a standout performance against Yale, recording five caused turnovers—a career high—and collecting two ground balls. No other player in his position has matched or exceeded five caused turnovers in a single game so far this season.
Senior Jimmy Kohr has contributed eight goals and two assists this year and has scored in 20 consecutive games since last season.
The Terriers have demonstrated strong defensive play through their ride, holding opponents to a .651 clearing percentage—the best mark nationally after four games. They are also leading all Division I teams in caused turnovers per game, averaging 15.5 takeaways over their first four contests.
Boston University has faced Navy ten times before, winning three of those matchups—two of which were at Nickerson Field. Last year, Navy defeated BU 13-9 in Annapolis. The Terriers’ most recent win over Navy was on April 2, 2022, by a score of 17-9. Five out of the last eight meetings between these teams have been decided by two goals or fewer.
Navy enters Saturday’s contest with a record of 3-1 after securing wins over VMI (19-12) and then-No.11/10 Penn State (12-11) last week. Mac Haley leads Navy with eight assists and nineteen points; twelve of those points came during last week’s games—including scoring Navy’s final three goals against Penn State.
On defense, AJ Marsh leads the Mids with six caused turnovers while earning Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week honors. At faceoff, junior Zach Hayashi and senior Colin Shadowens have each won twenty-nine out of fifty draws (.580). Hayashi leads Navy with nineteen ground balls; Shadowens has collected sixteen.
Goalkeeper Dan Daly holds a goals-against average of 9.76 along with a .451 save percentage.
