Boston University’s softball team concluded its participation in the Carolina Classic with losses to Louisville and No. 16 South Carolina on Saturday at Beckham Field in Columbia, South Carolina.
In the first game, BU trailed Louisville 5-0 before attempting a late rally. Junior Kyomi Apalit hit an RBI double in the fifth inning to put Boston University on the scoreboard. In the seventh inning, Apalit and senior Brooke Deppiesse singled with two outs, followed by freshman Irys Kline’s RBI single that benefited from a defensive error. However, Louisville brought in reliever Alyssa Zabala, who secured the final out to preserve a 5-3 win for the Cardinals.
“Trying to mount a rally, Christopher earned a two-out walk and scored on Apalit’s RBI double down the left field line to get on the scoreboard in the fifth,” according to Boston University Athletics.
During their second matchup of the day against South Carolina, BU took an early lead when Deppiesse singled and later scored on Kline’s RBI double. The Gamecocks responded quickly with multiple hits and capitalized on walks and errors to take control of the game. Despite putting runners on base in both of the last two innings, BU was unable to close the gap as South Carolina won 6-1.
The Terriers’ offense was led by Apalit, who went 4-for-6 over both games with a double and an RBI. Kline finished 3-for-6 with a double and two RBIs, while Deppiesse collected three hits across seven plate appearances and scored twice.
With Sunday’s scheduled game against Kennesaw State canceled due to weather concerns, Boston University will next compete at the Charlotte Invitational from February 20–22. The Terriers are set to play Jacksonville and Marshall twice each as well as face host Charlotte once.
