The Boston University women’s rowing team will compete against Northeastern in the Council Cup, its only home event of the season, according to an April 3 announcement from the university. The races will take place on the Charles River with events scheduled throughout the morning.
This matchup is significant for both teams as it continues a competitive tradition between Boston University and Northeastern. Last year, BU finished just 1.4 seconds behind Northeastern in the Council Cup, while placing ahead of them in several individual races, including Varsity 4+, Second Varsity 4+, and Third Varsity 4+ events. The margin of victory for BU’s First Varsity Four was just 0.4 seconds.
Northeastern enters this race after opening its season at the Doc Hosea Invite where it competed against nationally ranked teams such as Syracuse, Virginia, and Yale. Meanwhile, Boston University began its season with a strong performance by sweeping all eight races against Cornell, Colgate, and George Washington. The team’s Varsity Eight boat also received an honorable mention for Patriot League Boat of the Week.
The Terriers’ schedule includes six race days featuring three head-to-head competitions and two postseason regattas. They are set to face Cornell, George Washington, Colgate, Northeastern, Columbia, Brown, Rhode Island and Delaware during these meets. At season’s end they will participate in both Eastern Sprints and the Patriot League Championship.
Looking forward, Boston University aims to win its third consecutive Patriot League Championship on May 15 for a chance to qualify for the NCAA Championships later this spring. After facing Northeastern this weekend at home on the Charles River, BU will travel to Leonia, New Jersey next Sunday to compete against Columbia and Brown.
