Conan O’Brien, a 1985 graduate of Harvard College, addressed the Class of 2026 as the principal speaker at Harvard University’s 375th Commencement on May 28. O’Brien used humor to reflect on his own experiences and encouraged graduates to value humility and community over their academic credentials.

O’Brien told graduates that while they should feel pride in their accomplishments, he hoped that “one day, their status as Harvard grads might be ‘the least important thing people know about you.’” He added, “I really understand how much hard work it took for all of you to get to this point. You should feel enormous pride, just as I did on my Commencement day.”

He cautioned against arrogance, saying: “Many people are happy to mistake the lucky poker hand for their own brilliance, and fighting that human instinct has kept me sane.” He advised students that real education continues beyond college: “Your real education starts now… with a humble acceptance that your greatness comes from the mess around you, not despite it.”

O’Brien also credited his successes to support from others and luck. He said he resists “extreme narcissism,” referencing both U.S. leaders and social media culture. “I honestly believe that community, spontaneity, and a real commitment to humility have helped me build a rich life,” he said.

The ceremony included remarks from President Alan Garber, who spoke about current challenges facing Harvard. Garber said, “Our cause is just. Our principles are worthy. And our contributions to the common good are vital. This moment demands of us ongoing vigilance and unyielding effort as we continue to defend the University and its ideals.”

Harvard awarded honorary degrees during the event, including one for O’Brien which he accepted in honor of his late grandfather. Other recipients were Audra McDonald, Peggy Noonan, Geoffrey Hinton, and Noel Malcolm.

O’Brien closed by congratulating students not only for receiving their degrees but also for their determination and humanity.
