Don Sweeney, a former Harvard Crimson ice hockey player and current General Manager of the Boston Bruins, will serve as Assistant General Manager for Team Canada as they begin round robin play at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina. The Canadian team starts its tournament against Czechia this morning at 10:40 a.m.
This Olympic tournament is the first to feature full participation by NHL players since 2014. Sweeney and Team Canada are aiming for their third consecutive Olympic gold medal with NHL players on the roster, following previous victories in 2010 and 2014.
Sweeney previously worked on Canada’s front office staff during last year’s Four Nations Tournament, where Canada secured the championship after an overtime win over the United States at TD Garden.
During his time at Harvard, Sweeney was recognized as one of the top defensemen in program history. He contributed to three straight ECAC regular season championships and played a key role in winning the 1987 ECAC Tournament title. The teams he played on posted records of 18–3 in 1986, 20–2 in 1987, and 18–4 in 1988.
Drafted by the Boston Bruins in the eighth round of the 1984 NHL Draft, Sweeney went on to play more than 1,100 games in the NHL—1,051 of them with Boston—and won a gold medal with Team Canada at the 1997 IIHF World Championship.
Team Canada’s round robin schedule includes games against Czechia today at 10:40 AM, Switzerland on Friday, Feb. 13 at 3:10 PM, and France on Sunday, Feb. 15 at 10:40 AM. All games will be broadcast on Peacock.
