Harvard University baseball defeated California Baptist University 14-12 on March 16 in Riverside, California, securing its first win of the season in the final game of a four-game series at James W. Totman Stadium.

The victory marks an important milestone for the Crimson (1-12), who posted season highs in both runs and hits, with six players recording multiple hits. The team took early leads throughout the game and managed to hold off several comeback attempts by the Lancers (17-5).

Senior Jordan Kang led Harvard’s offense, going 3-for-5 with four RBIs, three runs scored, a home run—his first of the year—and a double. Sophomore Gavin Smith contributed significantly as well, finishing 2-for-4 with three RBIs, a home run, and a double. Senior Max Lane added three runs and two hits while first-year third baseman Matthew Witkow also had two hits and an RBI. Junior shortstop Jack Rickheim and senior first baseman Gio Colasante each tallied two hits and two runs.

On the mound, sophomore right-hander Owen Tahnk earned his first career save by recording the final two outs without allowing any baserunners. First-year right-hander Brett Gable picked up his first collegiate win after coming on in relief. First-year Davis Kahn made his debut start for Harvard, pitching over four innings.

The game’s scoring began with California Baptist taking an early lead before Harvard responded with six runs in the third inning to move ahead. The Crimson extended their advantage several times but faced pressure as CBU narrowed the gap late in the game. Key moments included Kang’s two-run homer in the sixth inning and Smith’s two-run shot in the ninth that helped secure Harvard’s lead.

Looking ahead, Harvard will begin Ivy League play with a three-game series at Columbia starting March 21.
