Harvard University’s baseball team lost to Rice University 9-0 in the final game of a three-game series at Reckling Park in Houston on Sunday. This matchup marked the beginning of March for both teams.
The Crimson, now 0-6 for the season, faced a strong pitching performance from Rice, which carried a combined no-hitter into the ninth inning. Harvard sophomore Cullen Stone broke up the no-hit bid with a single as a pinch hitter.
On the mound, Harvard junior right-hander Andrew Abler started and pitched four innings, allowing four earned runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out two batters. First-year pitcher Davis Kahn came on in relief for two innings, giving up one run and recording one strikeout. Sophomore Daniel Sams followed with 1.1 innings of relief, surrendering one run and collecting two strikeouts.
Offensively, Harvard struggled to generate momentum. Alongside Stone’s hit, sophomore Liam Wilson, sophomore Gavin Smith, and first-year Aidan Colasante each drew walks during the game.
Rice scored twice in the first inning and added another run in the second to take an early lead. After scoreless third and fourth innings from Harvard’s pitchers, Rice increased its advantage with two more runs in the fifth. In the top of the sixth inning, Harvard threatened with runners on first and second after walks by Smith and Colasante but was unable to capitalize. Rice then extended its lead further by scoring four runs in the seventh inning.
Looking ahead, Harvard will travel to Lynchburg, Virginia for a three-game series against Liberty University from March 6-8. The games will be available for viewing on ESPN+.
