The Harvard baseball team split a doubleheader against Brown at O’Donnell Field on Apr. 4, with the Crimson winning the opener 2-1 in walk-off fashion and dropping the second game 4-0.
The games were marked by strong pitching performances from both teams. In game one, junior second baseman Tyler Shulman secured the victory for Harvard with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning. Senior pitcher Gio Colasante started for Harvard and delivered seven innings, allowing only one run on four hits while striking out six batters.
Harvard came from behind to tie the first game in the eighth inning when Gavin Smith singled home Shulman. Relief pitcher Ryan McHugh earned his first win of the season after two scoreless innings. For Brown, Peter Dubie pitched over seven innings and gave up just one hit—the single by Smith that tied the contest—while Christian Keel took the loss after allowing one run in relief.
In game two, pitching continued to dominate as Harvard right-hander Andrew Abler retired Brown’s first 13 batters before giving up a solo home run to Mik Peterson in the fifth inning. Abler finished with six strikeouts over more than six innings but was tagged with his third loss of the year. Drew Nelson threw eight shutout innings for Brown, helping his team secure a 4-0 win despite both sides recording five hits each.
Colasante contributed offensively as well, going two-for-four at bat with a triple and two stolen bases during Saturday’s games. Peterson led Brown’s offense by hitting two home runs across both matchups.
The series between Harvard and Brown is set to conclude Sunday morning at O’Donnell Field, with first pitch scheduled for 10:30 a.m.
