The Harvard men’s heavyweight rowing team earned two medals at the IRA National Championship Regatta at Lake Natoma, as reported on May 31. The second varsity boat secured a bronze medal and the third varsity claimed silver.

The regatta began with the third varsity crew, stroked by Marco Vicino, competing in the A Final. Harvard was in third place behind Princeton and California after the first 500 meters but moved ahead of both during the second half of the race. The team finished just behind Washington with a time of 5:45.018.

Later in the morning, Harvard’s second varsity boat, stroked by Tyler Horler, delivered a performance that resulted in a bronze medal. The crew maintained second place for much of their race and challenged Princeton’s gold-medal-winning boat before Washington overtook them in the final 500 meters. Harvard finished with a time of 5:44.273.

In the final event—the varsity eight grand final—Harvard’s top crew, stroked by Ben Scott, placed fourth overall. After starting strong and holding onto second position through much of the first half of the race, they crossed in fourth with a time of 5:41.588.

The next competition for Harvard will be against Yale at the 159th Harvard-Yale Regatta on June 6 on Connecticut’s Thames River.
