Harvard University’s skiing teams began their competition at the Williams Carnival on Friday, achieving five top-30 finishes. The event took place at Jiminy Peak in Hancock, Massachusetts for alpine events and Prospect Mountain in Woodford, Vermont for nordic races.
Sophomore Duncan Armstrong led the men’s team with an 11th-place finish in the men’s giant slalom. This marked his seventh top-30 result of the season. On the women’s side, sophomore Skylar Sheppard finished 20th in the women’s giant slalom.
In nordic events, Harvard’s women’s team placed sixth overall in the 10k freestyle race. Senior Hayden McJunkin was Harvard’s top finisher, coming in 17th place. Junior Meredith Schwartz and sophomore Bennett Hutchison also finished within the top 30 of their respective races.
After day one, Harvard stands eighth out of 14 teams from EISA schools with a total of 172 points.
Armstrong completed his runs with a combined time of 1:32.95, earning him 29 EISA points and 24 NCAA points. Sheppard posted a time of 1:36.77 for her two runs, collecting 23 EISA points and 11 NCAA points.
McJunkin finished her race in a time of 30:01.1, earning her sixth top-30 finish this year along with 25 EISA points and 14 NCAA points. Schwartz completed her run in 30:33.0 for her fifth top-30 result this season.
On the men’s side for nordic skiing, Hutchison placed 26th with a time of 26:21.7.
Other notable results included Maya Eisner finishing 50th in women’s giant slalom and Clara Lake placing 31st in the women’s nordic race.
The Williams Carnival will conclude Saturday with alpine slalom and a nordic relay event scheduled for Harvard’s teams.
Next weekend, Harvard is set to compete at the Middlebury Carnival and NCAA Regional Championships from February 20 to February 21 at venues including Middlebury Snowbowl and Rikert Outdoor Center.
