Harvard University’s softball team completed a sweep of Cornell with a decisive 15-6 win on Apr. 4, marking its first Ivy League series sweep of the season.
The victory was highlighted by an offensive surge from junior infielder Sophie Sun, who recorded four hits and drove in seven runs, including a grand slam in the second inning. With this performance, Sun became only the seventh player in Harvard history to reach 100 career runs batted in (RBIs).
The Crimson posted a .341 batting average over the three-game series against Cornell and outscored their opponent 29-15. The team achieved double-digit hits for the tenth time this season during Saturday’s finale, collecting twelve hits overall. In addition to Sun’s contributions, senior infielder Finley Payne added two RBIs and sophomore catcher Quinn Salazar-Stewart delivered key hits that contributed to Harvard’s commanding lead.
Junior pitcher Nicolette Hunter hit her third home run of the year—all against Ivy League teams—and helped cap off a seven-run second inning that gave Harvard an early advantage. Despite some scoring by Cornell in later innings, Harvard maintained control and secured its first run-rule win of the Ivy League campaign with two more runs in the fifth.
Sun matched her single-game career best for RBIs with seven—an achievement she previously reached against Cornell during a game in April 2024 when Harvard won 19-1. The team’s fifteen runs are their highest total so far this season and their most against an Ivy League opponent since that same game last year.
Looking ahead, Harvard will travel to Providence next weekend for another three-game Ivy League series against Brown on April 11 and April 12.
