Harvard Men’s Swimming and Diving first-year William Mulgrew finished ninth in the 1,650-yard freestyle at the NCAA Championships on Mar. 25 at McAuley Aquatic Center in Atlanta.
Mulgrew’s performance highlights Harvard’s presence on the national stage, as he was the top Ivy League swimmer in this event. The result reflects both individual achievement and contributes to Harvard’s team score at a highly competitive meet.
Mulgrew, who is from Walpole, Massachusetts, swam in the fourth and final heat of the event during finals night. He completed his race with a time of 14:40.07, finishing sixth among eight swimmers in his heat. When combined with results from three earlier heats held during preliminaries, Mulgrew ranked ninth overall out of a field of twenty-nine competitors.
Ahmed Jaouadi of Florida won the event and set an NCAA record with a time of 14:10.03. Among other Ivy League athletes competing in the same race, Noah Millard from Yale placed sixteenth (14:47.47), while Santiago Gutierrez from Princeton finished twenty-sixth (15:05.96). After three events at the championships, Harvard stands nineteenth among twenty-six scoring teams with nine points.
Looking ahead to Friday’s competition schedule, Mulgrew will participate in the 500-yard freestyle while teammate Adriano Arioti is set for the 100-yard backstroke. Preliminaries are scheduled for 10 a.m., followed by finals at 6 p.m., both available live on ESPN+.
