Boston College was defeated by Virginia Tech 72-63 in a men’s basketball game held Tuesday evening in Blacksburg, Virginia. Boden Kapke led the Eagles with a career-high 25 points, making 11 of his 19 shots from the field. Fred Payne added 16 points and secured 12 rebounds, earning his first career double-double.
Virginia Tech started strong, opening with a 9-2 run. Boston College responded with scores from Donald Hand Jr. and Fred Payne to bring the score to 14-8 with just over twelve minutes left in the first half. The Hokies then went on a significant 13-0 run to build a 30-11 lead midway through the half. Kapke contributed five of Boston College’s next seven points, but Virginia Tech maintained control and led 35-24 at halftime.
In the second half, Boston College narrowed the gap to seven points early on before Virginia Tech extended their advantage again. Chase Forte hit a three-pointer and assisted Aidan Shaw for another basket as BC cut the deficit to six points with under twelve minutes remaining. Despite efforts by Boston College to close the gap further—getting within nine points late—the Hokies secured the win.
With this loss, Boston College’s record in ACC play stands at 3-14, and their overall season record is now 10-20. The all-time series between Boston College and Virginia Tech now favors BC at 22-15.
Boston College will return home for its final regular-season game against Notre Dame on Saturday, March 7 at Conte Forum. The game will start at noon and be broadcast on ESPNU as well as WEEI 850 radio. This matchup marks the teams’ 48th meeting; Notre Dame leads the series with a record of 30 wins to Boston College’s 17. In their previous encounter this season, Notre Dame defeated Boston College in South Bend by a score of 68-64.
“Kapke recorded a career-high 25 points, shooting 11-of-19 from the field,” according to team officials.
“Fred Payne logged 16 points and 12 rebounds for his first career double-double,” they added.
