Luke Murray, the Clement and Elizabeth Izzi Family Head Men’s Basketball Coach, announced on Apr. 13 the addition of Tim O’Toole, Kyle Griffin, Mathew Johnson, and Brenden Straughn to the Boston College Eagles men’s basketball program. O’Toole will serve as chief of staff while Straughn, Griffin, and Johnson join as assistant coaches.

The new appointments bring a range of experience to the program. O’Toole arrives after nine seasons at Pittsburgh as associate head coach and has over three decades in Division I coaching. His career includes leading teams to postseason play eleven times and earning recognition such as being named to the Silver Waves Media 100 Most Impactful High Major Assistant Coaches List in January 2026. O’Toole has also coached at California, Stanford, Syracuse, Fairfield—where he was head coach—and Duke.

Kyle Griffin joins from Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU), where he served as associate head coach for two years. During his time with FGCU, Griffin contributed to significant team milestones including an ASUN semifinal appearance in 2025-26 and helped develop key players like Keeshawn Kellman. His previous coaching roles include positions at La Salle University—where he was promoted from assistant coach to associate head coach—as well as Lehigh and Robert Morris.

Mathew Johnson comes from Princeton after one season there and six years with Connecticut (UConn). While at UConn, Johnson was part of a staff that won two national titles and five NCAA Tournament appearances. He worked closely on skill development for guards and contributed to recruiting top-five classes in both 2023 and 2025.

Brenden Straughn arrives following three seasons as an assistant coach at Syracuse. His college coaching journey began at Loyola Maryland before moving on to Saint Joseph’s University and George Washington University where he managed offense strategies and player development. In addition to his collegiate work, Straughn has developed numerous high-achieving athletes during his time coaching Team Takeover.

The new hires reflect Murray’s focus on building a strong support system around the team by bringing together coaches with varied backgrounds in player development, recruitment, tactical planning, and leadership.
