Northeastern women’s basketball head coach Priscilla Edwards-Lloyd announced on June 1 that Nick Alves has joined the Huskies as an assistant coach. Edwards-Lloyd said, “Incredibly excited to welcome Nick to our Husky family. Nick is a Boston native through and through; his pride for the city runs deep. Nick also brings high-level experience, having coached in the ACC. He is a passionate coach with a knack for player development. Nick is a rising star in this industry. We are excited to have him with us!”

Alves comes to Northeastern after spending two seasons with the Boston College women’s basketball program, where he most recently served as an assistant coach and director of operations. He initially joined Boston College as a graduate assistant during the 2023-24 season before taking on a volunteer role and eventually earning an elevated position on staff.

Before entering collegiate coaching, Alves built experience in various roles across Boston’s athletic community. He served as athletics director at both the Boston Center for Youth & Families and Boston Prep Charter School, while also compiling winning records at three different high school programs over six years as a head coach. In addition, Alves mentored and trained youth players throughout the city.

In 2017, Alves founded Better Opportunity Basketball, a non-profit organization designed to help inner-city youth navigate college recruitment by offering showcases, mentorship rooted in basketball and leadership development, along with academic support such as tutoring and SAT preparation. Alves has also led camps internationally in Belgium, Austria, France, the Netherlands, and Cabo Verde while working with players who have gone on to play professionally overseas.

A native of Boston himself, Alves played varsity basketball at Milton Academy under head coach Lamar Reddicks before attending Boston College, where he graduated in 2015 with degrees in sociology and communication. He later earned his master’s degree from Boston College.
