The Northeastern University baseball team lost to Boston College by a score of 3-2 on Mar. 24 at Friedman Diamond in Brookline, Massachusetts. The Huskies managed only four hits during the game, despite a late effort in the ninth inning that brought them within one run.
The matchup was closely contested throughout. Boston College took an early lead in the second inning with a leadoff double and an RBI groundout. Northeastern responded in the third when Anthony Ruggiero singled and Chris Walsh walked, setting up Harrison Feinberg’s RBI single that tied the game at one. However, Northeastern could not capitalize further after a wild pitch led to Walsh being thrown out at home and two runners were left stranded.
Boston College regained control in the fifth inning by scoring another run through a combination of walks and singles, making it 2-1. The Eagles added an insurance run in the ninth on a sacrifice bunt, extending their lead to 3-1.
In their final opportunity, Northeastern closed the gap as AJ Aschettino drew a walk and advanced on Carter Bentley’s bunt before Walsh delivered an RBI single to make it 3-2. However, BC’s closer struck out Ryan Gerety with the tying run on second base to end the game.
Pitching for Northeastern included Andrew Basel who allowed one run over three innings with two strikeouts, Cooper Maher who gave up just one earned run over four innings but took his first loss of the season, Matthew Sapienza who pitched a clean eighth inning, and Andrew Rogovic who finished out the ninth. Bentley stole two bases during the game for his ninth steal this season.
Boston College’s pitching staff combined for sixteen strikeouts against Huskies batters and secured their first win at Friedman Diamond since 2022. The Huskies are scheduled to play next at UMass Lowell with first pitch set for Wednesday afternoon.
