The Northeastern Huskies baseball team lost 3-1 to the second-ranked LSU Tigers on Saturday at Alex Box Stadium in Baton Rouge. This was only the second meeting between the two programs.
AJ Aschettino led Northeastern’s offense, recording all three of the team’s hits and scoring its only run. Aschettino hit a solo home run in the fifth inning, marking his first career hit, and later added a double for his first extra-base hit. He finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and was the only Northeastern player with multiple hits.
Harrison Feinberg contributed Northeastern’s other hit with an infield single during the sixth inning. The Huskies managed to put runners on second and third in that frame but were unable to score.
Matthew Sapienza started for Northeastern and took the loss after allowing three runs on four hits over 3.1 innings, striking out three batters. Luc Rising provided a strong relief effort, retiring nine consecutive batters over 4.2 scoreless innings after entering with a 3-0 deficit.
LSU’s three runs were aided by walks, wild pitches, and an error from Northeastern in each scoring inning. Despite opportunities late in the game, including bringing the tying run to the plate in both the eighth and ninth innings, Northeastern went 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position and left six runners on base.
Northeastern continues its weekend series in Baton Rouge with a game against Grambling State scheduled for Sunday at Alex Box Stadium.
“Northeastern went 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position and left six on base, failing to break through against one of the nation’s top pitching staffs.”
