The Northeastern Huskies women’s ice hockey team, ranked No. 5 nationally and holding the top seed in the Hockey East tournament, will face the sixth-seeded Vermont Catamounts in a semifinal game on Tuesday, March 3 at Walter Brown Arena. The match is scheduled for 6 p.m., with free admission and streaming available on ESPN+.
Northeastern aims to secure its seventh Hockey East title and make a tenth consecutive appearance in the championship game. The Huskies advanced to this round after defeating Boston University 2-1 in double overtime, with freshman Emy McDermid scoring the decisive goal. Head coach Dave Flint has led Northeastern to a strong postseason record, including an 18-1 mark as the No. 1 seed and an overall tournament record of 38-13.
Sophomore goaltender Lisa Jönsson continues her standout season, having been named a semifinalist for National Goalie of the Year for the second year running. She has also earned Hockey East Second Team All-Star honors. This season, Jönsson holds a goals-against average (GAA) of 1.64 and a .939 save percentage—both ranking eighth nationally—and has accumulated 19 wins, placing her seventh among NCAA goalies.
This matchup marks the fourth meeting between Northeastern and Vermont this season; Northeastern won all previous encounters during regular play. Vermont reached the semifinals by defeating Boston College 3-1 and features two Third Team All-Stars: Josie Hemp and Stella Retrum. Retrum leads her team with 28 points from 12 goals and 16 assists.
The winner of Tuesday’s game will advance to compete for the Hockey East Championship on Saturday, March 7 at 3:30 p.m.
“Northeastern is looking to capture its seventh Hockey East Title. NU is also seeking a 10th-straight appearance in the Hockey East Title game,” according to information provided by Northeastern Athletics.
“Sophomore netminder Lisa Jönsson was one of 12 goalies named as a semifinalist for the National Goalie of the Year… She also earned Hockey East Second Team All-Star honors,” said Northeastern Athletics.
“This marks the first postseason meeting between the two teams since a two-game quarterfinal series in 2020, with NU winning 5-1 and 3-1,” stated Northeastern Athletics.
