Freshmen Giacomo Martino and Jacob Mathieu from Northeastern University’s men’s hockey team were named to the Pro Ambitions All-Rookie Team as part of the preliminary postseason awards released by Hockey East on March 10.
The recognition highlights the strong performances of both players during their first collegiate season. Their contributions have helped Northeastern’s team throughout the year, with each surpassing 20 points.
Martino is third on the team with 24 points, including 13 goals and 11 assists. He leads Northeastern in power-play goals with seven, which also ranks him tenth nationally. In Hockey East play, his five power-play goals tie for third in the conference, while his ten goals are eighth overall. Among league rookies, Martino’s 18 points tie for third place and his eight assists tie for sixth. He scored in his debut game against Holy Cross and delivered game-winning goals in upsets over ranked teams such as UMass and Stonehill. Martino also contributed key power-play goals in victories against Boston College and Providence. The Toronto native has been recognized three times as Hockey East Rookie of the Week.
Mathieu ranks second on the Huskies with 27 points from nine goals and 18 assists. His four power-play goals are second on the team, while he is third with 47 blocked shots. Mathieu is seventh in Hockey East for faceoff wins with a total of 203. In conference play among rookies, he ties for fourth in points (17), fourth in assists (10), and fifth in goals (seven). Like Martino, Mathieu scored in his first collegiate game against Holy Cross and notched a game-winning goal against Providence. He recorded seven multi-point games this season and was named Hockey East Rookie of the Week after helping Northeastern split a weekend series with Boston University.
The selection of two freshmen to the All-Rookie Team reflects Northeastern’s depth of young talent this season.
