Basketball remains one of the most followed college sports in the country along with football, as large NCAA programs continue to attract significant fan attendance and television ratings similar to those seen in the NBA. Events such as March Madness routinely draw millions of viewers annually.

College sports have begun a new phase of athlete compensation after a federal settlement enabled schools to share revenue directly with players. Under the agreement, the NCAA will also pay $2.8 billion in retroactive damages to athletes who competed from 2016 onward over a period of 10 years.

In 2022, following persistent legal and legislative advocacy, college athletes were granted the ability to earn compensation from their names, images and likenesses due to new state regulations and an updated NCAA policy.

The NCAA reported earning nearly $900 million from March Madness and other Division I men’s basketball tournament media rights in the 2024 fiscal year, making basketball the main revenue source for the organization.
