Sherrill House ranked as Suffolk County’s second largest nursing home in the first quarter of 2026, data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) shows.

The facility offered 196 beds in this period, which is 72 beds higher than the county’s average as of Q1 2026. On average, 165.3 residents received care at Sherrill House throughout the quarter.

The CMS gave Sherrill House an overall rating of 2 out of 5, falling short of the Massachusetts statewide nursing home average of 3.1.

Benjamin Healthcare Center was Suffolk County’s largest nursing home during the quarter, providing 205 beds, while Highland Park Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center was third with 195 beds.

Sherrill House recorded zero fines or penalties as of the first quarter of 2026.

There were a total of 12 non-profit nursing homes operating in Suffolk County, Massachusetts at that time.

U.S. Census Bureau estimates indicate the population of older adults in the country is rising, while the number of younger residents is shrinking. Between 2020 and 2024, the population of Americans 65 and older grew 13%, as people under 18 declined by 1.7%. Over the past 100 years, the older adult population has surged from 4.9 million in 1920 to over 61 million as of 2024.

A study from 2021 suggests that nearly half of Americans in this age group—around 28 million—might require long-term care and services, while over a third may eventually need care in a nursing home.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
