About 27.7 percent of the 7,106 degrees and certificates handed out by Northeastern University in 2017-18 were to students in engineering programs, making them the most popular programs that year, according to the latest disclosure from the U.S. Department of Education.

The agency's National Center for Education Statistics shows the private not-for-profit institution in Boston conferred 1209 master's degrees and 687 bachelor's degrees in engineering programs.

But the single most popular program was for a bachelor's degree in general business/commerce. Data shows the school gave out 871 bachelor's degrees in general business/commerce, followed by 391 master's degrees in computer software engineering and 226 master's degrees in general engineering.

The university enrolled 21,627 students for 2017-18, including 13,909 in undergraduate programs and 7,718 in graduate programs.
