Baseball Swept by Coast Guard

THE BASICS

The Lead:  Senior Joe Colucci and Junior Matt Nachamie both blasted homeruns but the Emerson baseball team was swept by Coast Guard in two tightly contested games on Sunday afternoon.

 

GAME ONE: Coast Guard 10, Emerson 8

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

EMERSON LEADERS

Matt Nachamie: 1 for 2 with 2 RBI and 1 run scored (2-run homerun)

Thai Morgan: 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored

Calvin Jacey: 2 for 4 with 1 RBI and 1 run scored

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Neither team was able to get much offense going as there were 0 combined hits until the home half of the 3rd inning. In the bottom half of the 3rd inning, Coast Guard took advantage of 2 walks by Emerson when Blake Carroll drove 1 of his 2 doubles of the game into center field; plating 2 runners and giving the Bears a 2-0 lead.
  • The Lions would not remain quiet as they answered in the next half inning when Junior Thai Morgan singled to center field and 2 batters later was driven in when Junior Matt Nachamie tied the game at 2-2 with a long ball over the centerfield wall.
  • The Bears reclaimed the lead in the home half of the 4th inning when they took advantage of a 2-out error by the Lions, which plated a run.
  • The Lions were again quick to respond. Senior Calvin Jacey led off the top of the 5th inning with a single to left field and would score 2 batters later on a wild pitch; tying the game at 4-4.
  • With 2 outs in the bottom of the 5th inning, the Bears would rally. Two singles and the Lions walking in a run would plate 3 runners for Coast Guard; extending their lead to 6-4 after 5 innings.
  • In the top of the 6th, the Lions began chipping away at the lead as Sophomore Jake Okamoto was able to drive in a run. The Lions squandered a scoring chance as they left the bases loaded for the second straight inning.
  • Coast Guard got that run right back in the home half of the inning, plating a run on a single from Cody Fidler. After 6 complete innings, Coast Guard held a 7-4 lead.
  • The Lions cut into that lead again in the top of the 7th; making the score 7-5.
  • The top of the 8th began with Junior Chris Ferara reaching 1st base on a Coast Guard error. From there, the Lions were able to manufacture 2 runs and tie the game at 7-7.
  • Unfortunately for the Lions, Coast Guard scrapped together 3 runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning, reclaiming a 10-7 lead.
  • In the top of the 9th, Emerson added 1 run on a Jacey double but that was not enough as Coast Guard held on to a 10-8 lead and secured the victory in game 1.
GAME TWO: Coast Guard 7, Emerson 5

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Junior Matt Nachamie got the offense going for the Lions in the bottom of the 2nd inning with a leadoff double. He would later score on a wild pitch; giving the Lions a 1-0 advantage.
  • Coast Guard's Greg Boland answered with a leadoff double of his own, and we eventually score on an Emerson error; tying the game at 1-1 after 1 inning.
  • Both offenses stayed relatively quiet until the top of the 5th. With 2 down in the inning and the game tied at 1-1; Senior Quinton Copeland doubled to center field and the next batter, Briggs Loveland, plated Copeland with a single, reclaiming the lead for the Lions.
  • During the next half inning, the Bears did some 2-out damage of their own. With 1 hit, 2 walks, and an error by the Lions, Coast Guard scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 5th; grabbing a 4-2 advantage.
  • Senior Joe Colucci cut into that lead with a solo homerun in the top of the 6th, bringing the Lions within 1 run.
  • Entering the top of the 7th inning, the Lion found themselves down 4-3. Hits from Jacey, Copeland, and Morgan allowed Emerson to plate 2 runs in the inning, claiming a 5-4 lead halfway through the 7th inning. The Bears stranded 2 runners in the home half of the 7th.
  • The Bears led off the bottom of the 8th with a single from Boland, followed by a double from John Carroll. Back-to-back doubled from Coast Guard later in the inning plated 3 runs and gave the Bears the lead they needed to secure a victory. The Lions went quietly in the top of the 9th inning and Coast Guard secured the doubleheader sweep on Sunday afternoon.
