Three Athletes Head to Tennessee to try to Make History

56

For the first time in school history, three Newberry Track & Field Athletes head to the Lee University Last Chance meet with legitimate chance to punch their tickets to the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Jase Hunter, Tiwani Myles, and Andrea Pascual-Rivera will head up today and compete tomorrow at Lee University in Tennessee.

"With the weather we have had at meets this spring it has been tough for our athletes to put together a rhythm and hit marks they are capable of hitting.  Jase, Tiwani, & Adriana all have a shot to make it to Nationals." said Head Coach Jimmy Stephens

All three athletes have claimed individual SAC titles this season, Hunter claimed the weight throw title in the indoor season and Myles and Pascual-Rivera claimed the discus and hammer throw titles at the SAC Outdoor Championships last week, respectively. Hunter placed second in the hammer throw at the SAC Championships after a controversial fault call negated his final throw which would've won the competition.

Newberry's women's 4 X 100m relay hit a provisional qualifying mark at the SAC Championship.  This was the first time in program history that a qualifying mark had been achieved.   Being a provisional mark, the relay of Jada Johnson, Emma Johnson, Charlette Johnson, and Sarah Abumere was just outside of the bubble to get to Nationals.   Their mark was 20th in the nation, however only the top 16 teams qualify.

If any of the athletes are successful at qualifying, they will head to the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Allendale, Mich. which will be hosted by Grand Valley State on May 26th-28th.
