For the fifth time in program history, the Boston University women's basketball program has earned a bid to the Postseason Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT), the organization announced on Sunday (March 12).
BU was an automatic qualifier for the tournament after capturing the program's first Patriot League regular season championship in 2022-23. The Terriers will appear in the WNIT for the first time as a Patriot League member, and first since 2013. BU also made the bracket in 2009, 2010, and 2012.
The first round of the WNIT begins on Wednesday, March 15, and takes place through Friday, March 17. The Terriers will face off against A-10 co-regular season champion Rhode Island on Friday (March 17) at 6 p.m. from the Thomas M. Ryan Center in Kingston, R.I.
In 2022-23, BU became the third Patriot League team in history to win 17 league games, as the Terriers recorded their second-longest winning streak in program history when they won their first 17 conference contests. To this point, BU has won 24 games, the team's second-highest mark. The Terriers advanced to its second Patriot League Tournament championship game in three seasons. Dating back to the start of the 2019-20 season, BU has achieved a .657 winning percentage (71-37).
Individually, five Terriers garnered All-Patriot League honors. Junior Caitlin Weimar was named the program's first-ever Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year, while capturing First Team and All-Defensive honors. Head Coach Melissa Graves captured Patriot League Coach of the Year honors. Seniors Sydney Johnson and Maren Durant earned spots on the All-Defensive Team as well, with Johnson picking up First Team All-Patriot League accolades as well. Sophomore Alex Giannaros nabbed a Third Team selection. Finally, senior Maggie Pina made her second-career appearance on the Academic All-Patriot League Team.
The Postseason WNIT is the longest current running postseason event for women's college basketball, in addition to the NCAA Tournament. In existence since 1998, the WNIT has afforded hundreds of opportunities for schools in every conference to play in the postseason.
