Softball Opens Home Schedule with DH Split against Yale | https://goterriers.com/
Opening the home schedule, the Boston University softball team recorded a doubleheader split against Yale with a 13-0 run-rule victory and 2-1 loss on Tuesday afternoon.
The Terriers (20-7) tabulated 11 hits in the first game but were limited to three in the second by the Bulldogs (6-13), as they faced off for the first time in seven years and in Boston for the first time since 1996.
Junior Kayla Roncin compiled a team-high four hits along with four RBIs. Classmate Lauren Nett tallied three hits, and senior Caitlin Coker earned three RBIs. In the circle, freshman Kasey Ricard (7-2) posted four strikeouts for her fourth shutout of the season before senior Allison Boaz (10-4) recorded eight strikeouts in a pitchers' duel.
GAME 1: BU - 13, Yale - 0 (5 inn.)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- BU pulled away with five runs of four hits in the bottom of the second inning.
- Graduate student Emily Gant earned a lead-off walk before reaching third on Nett's double down the right field line.
- After the bases were loaded on an error, senior Audrey Sellers (single), junior Lauren Keleher (sac fly) and Roncin (single) all plated a run for a 3-0 advantage.
- Coker followed up with a two-RBI single to center.
- In the third inning, the Terriers added seven runs off six hits, including two-RBI singles by Roncin and Nett.
- Yale tried to avoid the shutout with back-to-back one-out singles in the fourth, but Ricard earned a fly out and infield pop up.
- After Roncin added one more run with an RBI double, Ricard sealed the run-rule decision with three quick outs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Boaz combined for four strikeouts through the first two innings before running into trouble in the third.
- The Bulldogs put the ball in play with one out on consecutive at-bats before advancing the runners on a ground out.
- Fouling off a pair of pitches with two strikes, Willa Ferrer drove a 2-2 pitch up the middle to grab a 2-0 lead for the Bulldogs.
- Yale tried to extend the lead with two more singles in the fifth, but Boaz ended the threat with a swinging strikeout.
- Gant broke up Nicole Conway's (3-3) no-hit bid in the fifth with an infield single and eventually moved to third following a hit-by-pitch and walk.
- Conway kept the Terriers scoreless with an outside pitch that drew groans from the crowd.
- BU tried to rally again in the sixth, as Roncin and Coker led off with back-to-back singles and took advantage of an error to cut the deficit in half.
- With the game-tying run at second and zero outs, Conway earned three straight fly outs.
- Conway was helped in the seventh with two catches by the Yale defense on hard liners to claim the victory.
- BU will head to Merrimack for two games on Wednesday (March 22) starting at 2 p.m.
