MALDEN, MA – On May 17, Democratic Whip Katherine Clark (MA-5) announced Jasmine Wang, a Lexington high school student, as this year’s Congressional Art Competition winner from Massachusetts’ Fifth Congressional District.

“Year after year, I am blown away by the talent and creativity of our district’s young artists. This time was no different. Jasmine’s winning submission skillfully captures the spirit of Lexington – depicting the pride, innovation, excellence, and beauty that sets the town and our entire Commonwealth apart,” said Whip Clark. “I am incredibly proud to bring her piece to the U.S. Capitol, where I have no doubt it will captivate the Members, staff, and visitors who roam the halls of Congress in the coming year.” 

Wang’s piece, entitled “The Birthplace of American Liberty,” depicts one of the Commonwealth’s most notable symbols, the Lexington Minuteman, and pays homage to the town’s history, culture, and accomplishments.

Wang was honored at a ceremony at the Malden Public Library and will be recognized at an annual awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. Her art will be  displayed for one year in the U.S. Capitol in the Cannon Tunnel, alongside winners from other Congressional districts. The second and third place submissions will be displayed at Whip Clark’s district offices for the next year. Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and in each Congressional district. Since the competition began in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students have participated.
