MEDFORD, MA — Yesterday, to kick off Pride Month, Democratic Whip Katherine Clark (MA-5) joined LGBTQI+ advocates, students, local leaders, and city officials at a Pride flag raising ceremony in Medford.
“From Stonewall and Compton’s Cafeteria to the fight for marriage equality and the movement for trans lives, the story of Pride is one of solidarity. It reminds us that our freedom lies in our collective strength — that an attack on one is an attack on all,” said Whip Clark. “I’m proud to stand alongside my neighbors and reaffirm our shared commitment to fighting for the safety, dignity, and liberty of every person. In raising this flag, we send our LGBTQI+ loved ones a simple message: we have your back. Always.”
Whip Clark is proud to be a champion for LGBTQI+ Americans. Last year, she proudly voted to pass the Respect for Marriage Act and codify critical protections for same-sex marriages. Last Pride Month, Clark and Congressman Hakeem Jeffries (NY-8) authored a letter calling for the installation of single-use occupancy bathrooms in the U.S. Capitol.
Clark has also championed the Exposing Discrimination in Higher Education Act, which would require universities that receive federal funds to apply for a waiver from the U.S. Department of Education before claiming a religious exemption from Title IX. The bill also requires the Department of Education and any exempted universities to prominently display the waiver on their websites to inform students of their beliefs before they arrive on campus.
