WASHINGTON, D.C. – On June 14, Democratic Whip Katherine Clark (MA-5) joined Representative Kathy Manning (NC-6), Senator Ed Markey (D-MA), and Members of Congress for a press conference to reintroduce the Right to Contraception Act, legislation that would codify the fundamental right to contraception, which the Supreme Court first recognized more than half a century ago in Griswold v. Connecticut. Below is a transcript of her remarks:

“I just want to bring us back to last year when this bill was on the Floor and every single Member of the House of Representatives had a chance to tell us where they stand. Everybody had a chance to prove we believe in your right to decide for yourself if and when to have a child.

“195 House Republicans voted no. 195 House Republicans admitted they don’t believe in the freedom to make our decisions about contraception. 195 House Republicans decided they know better than you, your family, and your doctor.

“This bill is about ensuring that control over your life stays in your hands. It’s about codifying what is already self-evident: your health care is your business. This is fundamentally about freedom. And next week, the American people will mark the one-year anniversary of the horrific Dobbs decision. And we’re here to send a straightforward and direct message: no matter the hurdle, no matter what extremists throw at us, Democrats will never back down from our defense of justice and freedom for all.”
