Sam Zuckerman, a computer science major at Tufts University, described on Apr. 7 his experience with long COVID and the challenges he faced during recovery. Zuckerman recounted that after initially testing positive for COVID-19 before his junior year and experiencing only mild symptoms, he developed severe fatigue and brain fog about a month later. These symptoms made everyday tasks difficult and forced him to take extended time away from classes.
The story highlights the impact of long COVID on students’ academic and personal lives. Zuckerman explained that minor activities such as walking or sending an email became exhausting, leading to significant disruptions in daily life. He said that despite trying various treatments and therapies, progress was slow and unpredictable.
Zuckerman shared how the persistence of symptoms affected both his physical health and ability to participate in normal activities: “I was still the same person on the inside, but the severe fatigue and brain fog limited me from interacting with the world in any meaningful way.” He also described making a promise to himself not to give up on recovery: “When my symptoms were severe, that promise forced me to do what was best for my recovery, no matter how hard it was.”
After two years unable to work or attend classes in person, Zuckerman gradually returned by taking online courses before coming back to campus three years after first falling ill. While not fully recovered, he reported significant improvements: “The few remaining long COVID symptoms I have left do not limit me from living my life fully and completely.” He added that overcoming this challenge made him more resilient and appreciative of daily opportunities.
Zuckerman concluded by expressing gratitude for his regained health: “Being healthy and able to carve your own path in life is a gift that most of us take for granted… I think we owe it to these people [who are too ill] to live life on our own terms and make each day count.” His story is part of ‘Our Tufts,’ a series featuring personal stories from members of the university community.
