Vinny Borgesi, captain of the Northeastern University men’s hockey team, has signed a two-year entry-level contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs, set to begin with the 2026-27 National Hockey League season, according to a March 17 announcement.
Borgesi’s signing marks a significant step in his hockey career after completing his senior season at Northeastern. He played an important role for the Huskies, helping them secure consecutive Beanpot Championships in 2023 and 2024 and contributing to their appearance in the 2025 Hockey East semifinals at TD Garden.
During his collegiate career, Borgesi appeared in 135 games for Northeastern, recording 16 goals and 64 assists for a total of 80 points. As a defenseman, he also tallied four game-winning goals, three power-play goals, took 252 shots on goal, and blocked 197 shots. In his final season, he led all Northeastern defensemen with five goals and fifteen assists for twenty points. He also recorded a team-high seventy-five blocks and led the nation in average time on ice for the second straight year at over twenty-seven minutes per game. In Hockey East conference play during his senior year, Borgesi ranked among the top five defensemen in several categories including power-play goals, blocks, points, goals scored, and assists.
Borgesi is recognized as a five-time Hockey East award honoree and has twice been named to the Hockey East All-Academic Team. His accolades include being selected as a Second Team All-Star in Hockey East for 2026 as well as being named a Walter Brown Award Semifinalist and Hobey Baker Award nominee. He also represented Northeastern on the U.S. Collegiate Selects at the Spengler Cup in 2025 where he served as team captain during their debut appearance.
With this contract signing, Borgesi joins other recent Northeastern alumni who have moved on to NHL teams: Jackson Dorrington (New York Rangers), Cam Lund (San Jose Sharks), Jack Williams (Columbus Blue Jackets), and Cameron Whitehead (Vegas Golden Knights).
The move highlights both Borgesi’s individual achievements and Northeastern University’s continued presence in developing players who advance to professional hockey.
