Zion Johnson, a 6'3", 310-pound Boston College offensive lineman, has been selected to play in the 2021 Reese's Senior Bowl.
Selected as a semifinalist for the Campbell Trophy – awarded to the recognized best football scholar-athlete in the country – the Bowie, Maryland, native has started at left tackle in each of Boston College's nine games for 2020, according to coverage by 24/7 Sports. He was also recognized by ESPN's Phil Steele as a 2020 preseason All-American and preseason All-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) selection.
He had to earn his starting position at Boston College, according to 24/7 Sports. Johnson transferred from Davidson for his third season, after establishing himself as one of the top Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) offensive linemen in the country.
During his time at Davidson, Johnson played in 22 games, starting 19 on the offensive line, according to his Boston College player profile. In 2018, he was selected for the Pioneer Football League All-Conference First Team and named a HERO Sports All-Sophomore Honorable Mention in 2018.
He didn't make the Boston College starting team immediately, but once he'd worked his way into the lineup he played 90% of the snaps at left guard, emerging as one of the best offensive linemen in the ACC, according to 24/7 Sports. Johnson won second-team all-conference honors in 2019 and ACC offensive lineman of the week three times.
Johnson will likely draw NFL interest, according to coverage by Pro Football Network' AJ Schulte. While he has had to work his way up, Schulte noted that he looked "like a seasoned pro" even in his short first season with Boston College.
Despite the COVID-19 pandemic limiting the preview Johnson's professional ability, Schulte wrote that Johnson showed he is potential NFL material in that time.
