Whyte Named to Lou Henson Award Watch List

A three-time All-Patriot League honoree, Boston University men's basketball graduate student Walter Whyte was named to the Lou Henson Award Watch List as announced by CollegeInsider.com.

The Lou Henson Award is presented annually to the nation's top Division I mid-major player and honors the former Illinois and New Mexico State head coach who won 775 games in 41 seasons.

The 6-foot-6 Whyte has helped lead BU to its first 4-1 start since 2016 averaging a team-high 16.2 ppg and 6.0 rpg while shooting a stellar 54.7 percent from the field. Owner of 15 career double-doubles, he's just 25 rebounds away from becoming the sixth Terrier in program history to reach 1,300 points and 700 rebounds.

BU has now had a Terrier named to the list in three of the last four seasons with Whyte being recognized for the second consecutive year. The New Haven, Connecticut, native averaged 12.7 ppg and 5.7 rpg behind All-PL First Team members Sukhmail Mathon ('22) and Javante McCoy ('22), as the Terriers went on to claim their first postseason win in six years with a victory over higher-seeded UNC Greensboro at the College Basketball Invitational in Daytona Beach, Florida. In 2019-20, Max Mahoney ('20) eventually claimed Lou Henson All-America honors after receiving Patriot League Tournament MVP accolades.

Whyte averaged 9.3 ppg and 5.0 rpg his freshman season to earn All-Conference Rookie Team honors. He missed his sophomore season due to injury and came back better than ever the following year, as he increased his season average to 13.0 ppg and 7.4 rpg while hitting a team-high 61 3-pointers en route to All-PL Second Team recognition. He played a major role in helping BU capture its first tournament title in a decade by averaging 15.3 ppg and 9.7 rpg.

During the pandemic-shortened 2020-21 season, Whyte finished second on the team in both scoring (13.5 ppg) and rebounding (6.8 rpg) to earn All-PL Third Team honors. He is now just 181 points away from becoming the 10th Terrier to reach 1,500 points and 125 rebounds away from becoming the fifth Terrier to haul in 800 boards.
