Navy Rides Late Surge Past Men's Basketball, 75-58

Opening Patriot League play, the Boston University men's basketball team fell to Navy, 75-58, on Friday afternoon at Case Gym.

The Midshipmen (8-5, 1-0 PL) saw their 13-point lead cut to four with 6:34 remaining but went on a 11-1 run over the next 3:50 to snap the Terriers' (7-7, 0-1 PL) eight-game home win streak that dated back to last February.

Graduate student Walter Whyte and senior Ethan Brittain-Watts netted a team-high 16 points apiece, as they hit two 3-pointers alongside graduate student Fletcher Tynen (10 pts.). Senior Nevin Zink and sophomore Malcolm Chimezie joined Tynen in hauling in seven rebounds to help BU win the rebound battle, 38-35.

Entering the game ranked eighth nationally in 3-point field goal percentage (.493) and 63rd in made 3-pointers per game (2.75), Tyler Nelson went 4-of-6 from behind the arc and 9-of-9 at the charity stripe en route to 25 points. Sean Yoder added 17 points, as Navy posted a 21-6 advantage in made free throws.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • BU jumped out of the gate with Tynen hitting a layup and feeding Whyte for a layup.
  • Brittain-Watts responded to a Navy jumper with one of his own and then found Whyte for a fast break trey for an early 9-2 lead at 17:24.
  • The Midshipmen though chipped away and eventually grabbed the lead for good, 13-12, at 12:05 on Yoder's layup.
  • Three minutes later, Yoder hit another layup and the bonus free throw to cap the game-changing 20-5 run.
  • Austin Inge's layup gave Navy its largest lead, 31-18, with 4:48 left in the half.
  • Junior Miles Brewster provided an energy jolt by nailing a 3-pointer to beat the buzzer and cut the deficit to 36-28 entering the locker room at the half.
  • BU pulled within three, 45-42, at 13:08 on Chimezie's hook shot and had a chance to move even closer.
  • The Terriers though missed a pair of free throws, and Yoder followed with a 3-pointer and bonus free throw for the six-point swing.
  • Facing a 54-44 deficit with nine minutes remaining, Whyte tried to mount a rally with a jumper and 3-pointer.
  • Tynen hit BU's eighth and final trey at 6:34 to put the deficit at 56-52 before Navy pulled away.
GAME NOTES

  • Brittain-Watts has now scored in double figures five times over the last six contests after hitting the mark four times during his first three seasons.
  • The Terriers outscored Navy in bench production (13-12) and in second-chance opportunities (14-10) but were outscored off turnovers, 14-12, and in the paint, 30-20.
  • BU was seeking its first 5-0 start at home since 1996.
  • The Terriers finished 8-of-36 in 3-point territory for their most attempts since going 11-of-39 against Marist on Dec. 18, 2021.
  • Navy earned its fourth straight win over BU after claiming a three-game sweep last season that included an 85-80 OT victory in the PL semifinals.
UP NEXT

  • BU will next visit Bucknell on Monday (Jan. 2) at 2 p.m.
  • The home team won both games last season.
